More Jobs for Filipinos: How The Rise of Industrial Parks is Helping Our Badly Beaten Economy

Keeping them energized is the top priority of the country’s largest power distributor.

Meralco is supporting the growth of industrial parks through a series of electric capital projects (ECPs) this year.

At a time when the economy is still reeling from the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping the lights on, quite literally, makes a world of a difference in helping businesses stay afloat. The ripple effect of providing uninterrupted power supply despite the lockdowns cannot be discounted: companies are able to continue their operations, jobs are saved, and the country inches a little closer toward recovery.

Meralco continues to upgrade its distribution network infrastructure to ensure reliable energy for all its customers in its franchise area.

At the Light Industry and Science Park 1 (LISP 1) in Cabuyao, Laguna, Meralco installed a new power transformer in its substation to ease the load of the existing transformer that serves close to a hundred locators and provide more reliable energy to the increasing power requirement in the area.

Industrial parks can accommodate new prospective locators.

Among the locators within the 178-hectare industrial park is Procter & Gamble Inc., a Fortune 500 company that manufactures personal, fabric, and home care products under the popular brands Tide, Joy, Pantene, Safeguard, and Pampers, among others. LISP 1 also houses the refrigerator plant of Concepcion Durables, Inc. and the air-conditioning plant of Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning Company, which are among the leading appliance manufacturers that produce air-conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers for the domestic market. Another company located here is Nexperia Philippines, Inc., a leading discrete, logic, and MOSFET producer in the semiconductor industry. Its products have common applications in the automotive and telecommunications industries.

Business as usual. Meralco has been providing uninterrupted power supply to enterprises despite the lockdowns.

At the Laguna International Industrial Park (LIIP) in Biñan, Laguna, Meralco installed a new double bus indoor Gas-Insulated Switchgear to ensure the continuous power supply of locators served by the substation.

Domingo also shared that improving the reliability of the substation will benefit not just locators inside LIIP, such as the Daiwa Seiko Philippines Corp. but also those inside the Laguna Technopark Inc. in Sta. Rosa, including electronics firm Futaba Corp. Philippines.

Semiconductor manufacturers located inside LISP 1 and LIIP, for example, will benefit from Meralco’s expansion projects, a boon to the electronics market which accounts for about 60 percent of the country’s annual exports. In fact, at least 53 regular and 29 associate members of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation, Inc. (SEIPI) are located in industrial parks in the southern portion of Meralco's franchise area.

Apart from LISP 1 and LIIP, Meralco is also supporting the growth of more industrial parks through a series of electric capital projects this year. One is the expansion of the Amadeo delivery point station to enhance the sub-transmission system in Cavite—this will benefit Gateway Business Park and First Cavite Industrial Estate.

To optimize this increase in capacity of Amadeo delivery point substation, Meralco recently completed the uprating of Amadeo-Gateway-FCIE 115 kV line. Another is the development of the Real 115-kV 34.5 kV Substation, which will improve the quality of the power distribution system in Calamba, Laguna and serve LISP 2 and 3, Calamba Premiere Industrial Park, and Filinvest Technology Park.

Meralco is also expanding its substation at the First Philippine Industrial Park in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, which includes the installation of an additional transformer to ensure better power quality for the park's locators. One of the companies in FPIP is YKK Philippines Inc., the country's leading fastening company that produces zippers, snaps, buttons, and buckles, among others. Also located here is Cal-Comp Technology (Philippines), Inc., which designs, develops, and manufactures hard disk drives and consumer electronics such as calculators, smart home appliances, and smart beauty products for leading global brands.

On top of all of these projects, Meralco is set to commission the 600 MVA, 230kV-115kV Calamba Delivery Point Substation the second quarter of 2021. The project, which was developed in coordination with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, will address the existing and future capacity and reliability concerns in Meralco’s Laguna 115 kV backbone system.

“Despite community quarantine measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Meralco and its subsidiaries are continuously working hard to improve its distribution system, allowing companies to optimize energy efficiency at their plant sites,” Domingo added.
