Sanitizing desks and office chairs is one thing, but more innovative solutions are needed to keep Covid-19 at bay.

Within the confines of your home or office where the steady flow of the air conditioner provides instant relief from outdoor dust and the sweltering sun, it is easy to be lulled into thinking that you are safe indoors. On the contrary, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality is two to five times worse than outdoor air.
This situation—compounded by Covid-19, a respiratory virus that has left more than a million people and counting dead worldwide—has highlighted the urgent need for innovative solutions, including those that address indoor air pollution.
For the management of RCBC Plaza, a premium office building at the heart of Makati City's central business district, a quick and efficient solution was a must. "We are a LEED-certified building. Even before the pandemic started, foremost in our objective was to monitor our carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels," said RCBC Plaza general manager Marjorie Abot.

Partners in health and safety
RCBC Plaza turned to energy solutions expert MServ to address its requirement after attending a webinar in May hosted by Manila Electric Co (Meralco).
"Even prior to the lockdown, we were already sanitizing high-touch areas. When we attended the webinar, one product that we really liked was the UV Care escalator handrail sterilizer," Abot said.
"We are very glad to have partnered with MServ because it was very difficult to make the order directly. MServ made the reservation for us, and in two weeks the escalator handrail sterilizers were delivered and installed," she added. Eight units, each capable of killing 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, were installed at RCBC Plaza for its four sets of escalators.
"MServ understands RCBC Plaza's urgency toward this need to sanitize their areas. Hence, we addressed their lead time concerns and made sure to prioritize their requirements," said Wilfredo Legaspi, MServ general manager for HVAC, Lighting and Auxiliaries.

HVAC solutions
Aside from escalator handrail sterilizers, MServ also offers HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) solutions to prevent the spread of germs, including the installation of filters and purifiers that help remove airborne particles and pollutants; air quality sensors and monitoring system which provide in real-time data; and humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
For Abot, the timely installation of the escalator handrail sterilizers by MSERV and the strict implementation of health protocols have paid off: RCBC Plaza has, so far, managed to control local transmission of the coronavirus disease.
Abot said both RCBC Plaza staff and tenants appreciated the "tangible" sterilizers on top of the other safety and health protocols the property management implemented, such as the use of thermal scanners, deployment of "ninjas" or personnel who swiftly and unobtrusively sanitize high-touch areas, rerouting of high foot traffic areas, and setting up of a dedicated isolation area in the building.
"If there are other products offered by MServ that are applicable to us, we are open to these,” she said. “Our expanded partnership with MServ is timely, especially since the situation right now is very uncertain and their products will still be relevant under the new normal.”
