The partnership will also help the PLDT group identify opportunities to better comply with the recently implemented Energy Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (RA 11285), which encourages Filipino companies to be more sustainable with their energy resources and consumption.
When two of the country’s major utilities connect as stewards for the next generation, it spells a brighter future for our nation.
With the aim to go beyond mere compliance to the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Act (RA 11285), the PLDT group (PLDT, Inc., Smart Communications, Inc., and ePLDT) tapped Meralco subsidiary MServ to perform an energy efficiency audit on 139 of its establishments as well as its data centers.
MServ will install new magnetic chillers that are expected to translate to as much as 40% on operational expenses. Annual electrical facility preventive maintenance for 74 PLDT and Smart offices will also help the company avoid power outages and improve the performance of equipment in these facilities. The partnership also includes several other initiatives, including installation of indoor air quality solutions in PLDT offices and full electrical reliability audits of ePLDT data centers.
PLDT partnered with another Meralco subsidiary Spectrum to harness solar energy, starting with 5 sites in the Visayas region where solar panels will be installed to generate approximately 635,845 kWh of renewable energy per annum, reducing PLDT’s carbon footprint by 453 metric tons—the equivalent of 46,470 new trees planted every year.

The collaboration of PLDT and the Meralco subsidiaries was announced at a virtual ceremonial signing where PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alfredo S. Panlilio, Meralco Energy, Inc. (MServ) President and CEO Ronnie L. Aperocho, and Spectrum, Inc. President and CEO Ferdinand O. Geluz were in attendance.
Panlilio said the transition to eco-friendly energy solutions reinforces the environmental pillar of PLDT and Smart's ESG goals, with sustainability being one of the group's key focuses.
"As we face daunting challenges on how to protect our environment, we believe that entering into partnerships with like-minded organizations such as Meralco, MServ, and Spectrum can help us contribute more significantly to the preservation of the planet and overall sustainable development," Panlilio explained.
Aperocho added: “MServ is honored to be chosen as PLDT’s partner in its energy efficiency journey. This energy audit is the important first step in this journey and we hope to enable more sustainability projects in the coming years."
“Spectrum’s solar rooftop systems will significantly reduce PLDT’s carbon footprint and provide substantial savings on energy costs over the contract duration. This is a testament of Spectrum’s commitment to partner with the business sector and communities nationwide in providing an accessible clean energy solution that upholds our collective sustainable development agenda,” said Geluz.
